Poker is a card game in which players place wagers on the value of their cards. Each player competes for an amount of money contributed by the players themselves (called the pot). The highest-ranked hand wins all the money. Even though there are strategic elements to the game, luck plays a significant role in poker’s overall outcome.
The earliest forms of poker were bluffing games, and poker’s cultural origins can be traced back to German bluffing games in the sixteenth century and French bluffing games such as Poque. Various card games developed from these and from other bluffing games that incorporated betting intervals, with the current form of poker becoming popular around 1900.
In all poker variants, players compete for an amount of money or chips contributed by all players in the pot. This money is placed in the pot before the cards are dealt. A player’s contribution to the pot is known as his stake, and he may increase or decrease it at his discretion. A player who does not wish to contribute his stake to the pot is said to fold and to drop out of the game.
After the initial two cards are dealt, a round of betting begins. The first person to the left of the dealer has to put in 2 mandatory bets called blinds before seeing their cards, this creates a pot and encourages competition among players. Once everyone has a chance to look at their cards, they can choose to hit, stay or double up.
